The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a fresh warning to Nigerian travellers against visa overstays, stressing that violations of immigration rules could negatively affect future travel opportunities for other citizens seeking entry into the country.
In an advisory released on Monday through its official X account, the mission urged Nigerians to strictly comply with U.S. visa conditions and immigration regulations throughout their stay in the United States.
According to the mission, visa overstays by some travellers not only violate immigration laws but also create broader consequences that may affect students, business travellers, tourists, and families who follow the rules.
The statement noted that such actions can influence how future visa applications from Nigerians are viewed and processed, potentially limiting opportunities for responsible applicants.
“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the advisory stated.
It added that stronger compliance with visa rules helps preserve access for legitimate travellers and supports smoother travel arrangements for those visiting the U.S. for education, business, family visits, and other lawful purposes.
The U.S. Mission also raised concerns over visa fraud and the misuse of travel documents, describing both as serious issues that threaten the integrity of the immigration system.
It urged applicants to remain honest during the visa application process and to respect the terms attached to their visas after arrival in the United States.
The mission emphasised that safeguarding the credibility of the visa process is a shared responsibility and called on members of the public to support efforts aimed at maintaining lawful and transparent travel procedures.
As part of that effort, individuals with credible information regarding visa fraud, fake travel documentation, or other immigration-related misconduct were encouraged to report such cases directly to official consular fraud prevention units.
Reports can be sent through the designated channels provided by the U.S. consular offices in Abuja and Lagos.
The mission reaffirmed its commitment to promoting safe, legal, and orderly travel between Nigeria and the United States while ensuring that law-abiding travellers are not unfairly affected by the actions of those who violate immigration laws.
The advisory comes amid growing concerns over global immigration compliance and increased scrutiny of visa applications across several countries, making adherence to visa rules more important for international travellers.
