The Governance Advisory Council (GAC) in Lagos State has formally endorsed Deputy Governor Kadri Obafemi Hamzat as the consensus governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election.
The decision was reached during a high-level meeting of party leaders held on Tuesday at Lagos House, Marina. The announcement was made by the GAC chairman, Tajudeen Olusi, who confirmed that all 21 members present unanimously agreed on Hamzat’s candidacy.
According to Olusi, the endorsement reflects a unified position within the party’s top decision-making structure in Lagos, reinforcing Hamzat’s emergence as the preferred successor within the APC’s political arrangement in the state.
Following the consensus, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu revealed that members of the council had also resolved to collectively fund and obtain the party’s governorship nomination form on behalf of the deputy governor. He described the gesture as a collective sacrifice by party elders and stakeholders to ensure smooth succession planning.
Sanwo-Olu further noted that the financial commitment extended beyond active politicians, stating that even retired members of the council contributed from personal savings to support the purchase of the nomination form.
The governor also referenced a similar arrangement in which Lagos stakeholders previously mobilised resources to procure the presidential expression of interest form for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential race, describing it as part of the party’s tradition of internal consensus-building.
The GAC, established in 1999 by Tinubu, is widely regarded as the highest advisory and strategic body of the APC in Lagos State. It plays a key role in shaping political succession, guiding appointments, and influencing zoning arrangements across the state’s political structure.
Hamzat, who has served as Lagos State deputy governor since 2019, is now positioned as the party’s flagship candidate under the consensus arrangement, pending formal ratification and electoral processes ahead of the 2027 polls.
