Former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and ex-Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have formally defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in a move that further reshapes Nigeria’s opposition dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The two political heavyweights were officially received into the party on Sunday in Abuja, where they were issued NDC membership cards following a high-level closed-door meeting with the party’s leadership. Their entry into the NDC comes shortly after their departure from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where both had been involved in coalition discussions aimed at building a united opposition front.

Welcoming them into the party, former Bayelsa State governor and current NDC national leader, Seriake Dickson, described their defection as a significant milestone for the party’s growth and national appeal. He noted that the inclusion of both leaders would strengthen the NDC’s capacity to compete effectively in future elections.

Obi, who emerged as the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, and Kwankwaso, who contested under the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), remain influential figures with substantial grassroots support across different regions of the country.

Supporters who gathered at the venue cheered the announcement, expressing optimism that the move could signal the beginning of a broader coalition capable of challenging the dominance of ruling and established parties.

The development highlights an intensifying wave of political realignments among opposition leaders, as consultations and strategic alliances continue to take shape in preparation for the 2027 electoral contest. Analysts say such shifts may play a decisive role in determining the structure and strength of opposition campaigns in the coming years.
