Southampton Reach Premier League Playoff Final
Southampton earned a dramatic extra-time victory over Middlesbrough to secure a place in the Championship playoff final. Shea Charles scored the decisive late winner as the Saints moved closer to an immediate return to the Premier League after last year’s relegation.
Southampton booked a place in the Championship playoff final after fighting back to defeat Middlesbrough 2-1 after extra time at St. Mary’s Stadium. The dramatic victory secured a meeting with Hull City as the Saints moved one step closer to a return to the Premier League.
The match began in painful fashion for Southampton when Riley McGree stunned the home crowd after only five minutes. The Middlesbrough midfielder calmly placed his shot into the bottom corner to hand the visitors an early advantage.
Southampton responded with urgency and created several chances before finally drawing level just before half-time. Striker Ross Stewart headed home after goalkeeper Sol Brynn pushed away a powerful effort from Ryan Manning. Stewart’s goal lifted the atmosphere inside a tense St. Mary’s Stadium and set up a fierce second half.
The contest remained finely balanced throughout normal time as both teams pushed for a decisive breakthrough in the Championship playoff final race. Tempers also boiled over on the touchline, with Middlesbrough boss Kim Hellberg and Southampton’s Tonda Eckert needing to be separated by officials during a heated exchange.
Sky Sports later reported that Middlesbrough defender Luke Ayling informed referee Andy Madley about alleged “discriminatory language” involving Southampton defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis.
After 90 exhausting minutes ended 1-1, extra time finally produced the winning moment. Midfielder Shea Charles curled a superb left-footed strike off the inside of the post in the 116th minute to send Southampton supporters into celebration.
The Saints will now face Hull City on May 23 in the Championship playoff final, often described as the “richest game in football” because of the financial rewards linked to Premier League promotion.
Can Southampton complete their comeback story and return to the Premier League?
