The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) have announced the rollout of a new Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system to replace the existing Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) nationwide.
The development, disclosed in a public notice issued on Monday, is backed by the Tax Administration Act 2025 and forms part of broader reforms aimed at modernising Nigeria’s tax administration architecture. Under the new framework, all taxable individuals and entities will be required to obtain the new Tax ID.
According to the agencies, the Tax ID will serve as a unified identifier across federal and sub-national tax authorities, enabling streamlined access to tax services and improving coordination across government revenue systems. The structure is expected to consolidate taxpayer records, reduce duplication, and improve the accuracy of tax data management.
The joint statement noted that the initiative is designed to strengthen compliance efficiency, enhance transparency in tax processes, and improve overall service delivery within the fiscal ecosystem.
Key expected outcomes of the system include simplified tax registration and filing processes, improved revenue assurance through reduced leakages, enhanced visibility of taxpayer data, and better harmonisation of records across all tiers of government.
The agencies also directed ministries, departments, agencies, financial institutions, and other organisations currently integrated with the TIN Validation API to note that the platform will be decommissioned as part of the transition to the new Tax ID system.
Stakeholders requiring integration or validation support have been advised to contact the relevant authorities via the Joint Revenue Board at smd@jb.gov.ng and the Nigeria Revenue Service at tax.automation@nrs.gov.ng.
The transition is positioned as a key step in Nigeria’s ongoing digital public finance reforms, with expectations of improved efficiency, accountability, and taxpayer experience across the national tax system.
