Market Capitalisation: Dangote Cement Maintains Largest Position
Dangote Cement Plc has maintained its dominance on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), standing as the largest listed company by market capitalisation, with a value standing at approximately N19.91 trillion at the close of trading on Tuesday.
Trailed by MTN with N17.22 trillion after the close of Tuesday’s trading, Dangote Cement’s huge capitalisation reinforces its stronghold within the industrial goods segment, despite broader market pressure.
At the close of the latest trading session, the NGX recorded a total turnover of 703,839,327 shares executed across 64,383 deals, valued at NGN 32.10 billion. This represents a softening in market activity when compared to the previous trading day, with volume declining by 12 per cent, turnover slipping by 13 per cent, and deal count contracting by 26 per cent.
Market capitalisation across the exchange stood at approximately NGN 161.3 trillion, reflecting a relatively stable valuation backdrop even as trading momentum weakened.
Overall market breadth closed negative, with 133 listed equities participating in trading. The session ended with 27 gainers and 33 losers, indicating a mildly bearish sentiment across the board.
On the gainers’ chart, FTN Cocoa Processors led the pack with a 10.00 per cent appreciation, closing at NGN 9.79 per share. It was closely followed by Zichis Agro Allied Industries, which advanced by 9.97 per cent, indicating strong investor appetite for agro-linked stocks during the session. Skyway Aviation Handling Company also recorded a robust performance, rising by 9.79 per cent, while Caverton Offshore Support Group completed the top gainers list with a 9.76 per cent increase, reflecting sustained interest in aviation and energy-adjacent equities.
Conversely, the losers’ chart was dominated by Unilever Nigeria, which recorded a full 10.00 per cent decline to close at NGN 153.00 per share, marking the steepest drop of the trading session. Trans-Nationwide Express followed with a 9.92 per cent depreciation, while Sovereign Trust Insurance declined by 9.81 per cent amid continued selling pressure in select insurance counters. McNichols also weakened, shedding 9.26 per cent as bearish sentiment persisted in the mid-cap segment.
In terms of trading activity, Access Holdings dominated the volume chart with 88.4 million shares exchanged. It was trailed by Linkage Assurance, Sterling Bank, and Secure Electronic Technology, reflecting sustained liquidity concentration in financial services and select low-priced equities.
Despite mixed sector performance, blue-chip counters remained largely resilient. Dangote Cement retained its leadership position as the most capitalised stock on the exchange, while MTN Nigeria followed closely. Other major names, including Seplat Energy, Lafarge Africa, and Aradel Holdings closed flat, underscoring a cautious but stable positioning among heavyweight stocks.
