Labour Party Reschedules Primary Elections

The Labour Party has postponed its previously scheduled primary elections and announced a new date for all contests ahead of the next electoral cycle.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the party had initially fixed May 27 for governorship and State Houses of Assembly primaries, while presidential and National Assembly primaries were expected to hold on May 29.

However, the party has now decided that all primaries for the offices of President, Governor, Senate, House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly will take place together on Saturday, May 30.

Explaining the change, party spokesman Mr Asogwa said the earlier dates clashed with two major national events. He noted that May 27 coincides with the 2026 Eid-el Kabir celebration, while May 29 marks the third anniversary of the inauguration of elected public office holders across Nigeria.

According to him, the Labour Party primaries were rescheduled to allow party members, aspirants and supporters to properly observe both important occasions.

“As a people-oriented and responsive political party, we deemed it appropriate to adjust the schedule in order to enable members, aspirants, supporters and Nigerians generally to fully observe these important occasions,” Asogwa stated.

He also apologised for any inconvenience the adjustment may cause aspirants, stakeholders and supporters, while thanking them for their understanding and cooperation.

The decision means all major party primaries will now hold on the same day, creating a more unified electoral process for the Labour Party primaries across the country.

Political observers are expected to closely monitor the revised schedule as parties continue preparations for future elections in Nigeria.
