Mamman Begins 75-Year Jail Sentence
Former Minister of Power Saleh Mamman has begun serving a 75-year prison sentence after his conviction over a ₦33.8 billion money laundering case. The EFCC also seeks forfeiture of several Abuja and Kaduna properties allegedly tied to the former minister.
Former Power Minister Saleh Mamman has started serving his 75-year prison sentence after a Federal High Court order in Abuja.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) moved former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, to the Kuje Correctional Centre after a court order confirmed the start of his prison term. Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Maitama, Abuja, gave the directive after EFCC officials presented Mamman before the court.
The money laundering case involved more than ₦33.8 billion linked to major power projects, including the Zungeru and Mambilla hydroelectric projects. The court convicted Mamman on all counts tied to an amended 16-count charge on May 7. Days later, the court sentenced him in absentia to 75 years in prison.
According to the EFCC, Mamman left Abuja for Kaduna before operatives arrested him on May 19 in the Rigasa area alongside a relative. During proceedings, his relative, Shamsudeen Mohammed, told the court, “My name is Shamsudeen Mohammed. He is my relative. He was sick and I was helping him to take his traditional medicine. He was brought by a taxi from Abuja to Kaduna.”
Justice Omotosho told the former minister that the 75-year prison sentence began immediately after the proceedings. “The sentence starts to run from today,” the judge said while explaining the conviction and sentencing.
The EFCC forfeiture application also seeks control of five properties in Abuja and Kaduna allegedly connected to Mamman. The court adjourned the matter until June 8, 2026, to allow him respond and secure legal representation.
