Fans Clash Before Conference League Final
Crystal Palace and Rayo Vallecano supporters clashed in Leipzig ahead of the Conference League final. German police detained two people and increased security measures as both clubs prepared for their first-ever European final appearance.
Supporters of Crystal Palace and Rayo Vallecano clashed in Leipzig ahead of the UEFA Conference League final, prompting police intervention on Tuesday evening.
German police said tensions rose in Leipzig after around 300 Rayo Vallecano supporters reportedly encountered Crystal Palace fans gathered outside local restaurants. According to authorities, bottles, beer glasses, and outdoor furniture were thrown during the confrontation as both sets of supporters exchanged hostility before the highly anticipated Conference League final.
Police also responded to another separate incident involving approximately 60 Crystal Palace supporters who were accused of provoking Spanish fans in the city centre. Officers moved quickly to prevent the situation from escalating further.
Leipzig police confirmed that two people were detained following the disturbances. Authorities also stated that two police officers suffered minor injuries during the operations but remained fit to continue their duties. More than 300 individuals had their identities checked as part of ongoing security measures surrounding the Conference League final.
The final carries major significance for both clubs, as neither Crystal Palace nor Rayo Vallecano has previously appeared in a European final. The match also marks the final game in charge for Palace manager Oliver Glasner, who is expected to leave the club at the end of the season.
A victory for Crystal Palace would also strengthen the possibility of English clubs completing a clean sweep of Europe’s three major men’s club competitions this season. Aston Villa already secured the Europa League title last week, while Arsenal are preparing to face Paris Saint-Germain in the upcoming Champions League final on Saturday.
Security presence in Leipzig has remained high as authorities continue monitoring supporters ahead of kickoff.
