Anastasia Potapova came from behind to defeat defending champion Coco Gauff in three sets at Roland Garros. The Austrian battled through a tense contest to reach the fourth round, ending Gauff’s hopes of retaining the French Open title.
Anastasia Potapova produced a remarkable comeback to defeat defending champion Coco Gauff and advance to the fourth round in Paris.
Anastasia Potapova ended Coco Gauff’s French Open title defence on Saturday after securing a hard-fought three-set victory at Roland Garros. The Austrian, seeded 28th, recovered from a set down to beat the fourth-seeded American 4-6, 7-6 (7/1), 6-4 in a gripping third-round encounter.
Reflecting on the result, Potapova said, “I think I’ve had a few (big wins) before, but I’d put it top three for sure.”
Despite dropping her opening service game, Coco Gauff quickly regained control of the first set. The reigning champion broke her opponent twice, including in the 10th game, to secure the early advantage.
Potapova responded strongly in the second set, racing into a 3-0 lead with consecutive breaks. However, both players struggled to hold serve as momentum shifted repeatedly. The Austrian missed two opportunities to close out the set before Gauff battled back to level at 5-5. Potapova eventually regained her composure, forcing a tie-break and dominating it to level the match.
The deciding set delivered more drama. Coco Gauff’s French Open title defence appeared on track when she earned an early break and moved ahead. Potapova, however, fought back to restore parity at 3-3 and then held serve under pressure despite facing break points.
With the score at 5-4, Potapova capitalised on a late collapse from Gauff. From 30-0 on her serve, the American lost control as Potapova seized the opportunity to complete one of the tournament’s biggest upsets. The victory marked Potapova’s third career win over Gauff and brought an end to Coco Gauff’s French Open title defence.
Potapova will now face Anna Kalinskaya, the 22nd seed, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
