JUNE 12: FG Unveils 2026 Democracy Day Programme
The Federal Government has announced the programme for Democracy Day 2026, featuring religious services, a public lecture, youth-focused events, a presidential broadcast and a gala night to commemorate Nigeria’s democratic journey and honour June 12 heroes.
The Federal Government has announced a lineup of events for the 2026 Democracy Day celebration scheduled for June 12.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, revealed the programme and described Democracy Day as an important moment for Nigerians to remember the sacrifices made in the struggle to restore democratic governance. He said the occasion honours those who played key roles in defending democracy, particularly the heroes of the June 12, 1993 election and the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola.
According to Akume, the annual observance also provides an opportunity for the Federal Government to highlight progress made in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting national development despite current economic and social challenges. He noted that Democracy Day 2026 will serve as both a reflection on the nation’s democratic journey and a platform to showcase government achievements.
The approved schedule for Democracy Day 2026 begins with a World Press Conference on June 4, followed by Special Juma’at Prayers on June 5 and a Special Inter-denominational Church Service on June 7. A Democracy Day Public Lecture will take place on June 9, while Youth and Women-Oriented Programmes are set for June 10.
The main events on June 12 will include a Presidential Broadcast, during which Nigerians will receive a message from the President on the state of the nation and the country’s democratic progress. Activities will conclude with the Democracy Day Gala Night later that day.
As Nigeria marks another year of democratic governance, Democracy Day 2026 aims to celebrate the nation’s democratic achievements while recognising the individuals whose sacrifices helped shape the country’s political future.
