Rivers United players and officials avoided serious harm after the club’s team bus was involved in an accident while travelling for a cup fixture.
Rivers United have confirmed that their players and officials escaped serious injury after the team bus was involved in a road accident on Thursday while travelling to Awka, Anambra State, for a President Federation Cup Round of 16 match against Nasarawa United.
According to a statement released by the club through Media Officer Charles Mayuku, the incident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt shortly after the team departed from its training camp.
The club disclosed that several players and officials sustained minor injuries during the accident. However, no fatalities or life-threatening injuries were recorded.
“The club can confirm that some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident. Thankfully, there have been no fatalities or life-threatening injuries reported. All affected individuals are currently receiving appropriate medical attention and are in stable condition,” the statement said.
Rivers United added that its medical team is closely monitoring those affected while club management evaluates the situation and reviews arrangements concerning the team’s travel plans and upcoming fixture.
“The safety, health, and well-being of our players and officials remain our utmost priority,” the club stated.
The club also expressed appreciation to supporters, partners and members of the football community who have shown concern following the incident.
The accident comes at a critical point in the season for Rivers United, who are still pursuing silverware after narrowly missing out on the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title. The Port Harcourt side, coached by Finidi George, finished second behind Rangers International, who secured the championship by just one point on the final day of the campaign.
Despite that disappointment, Rivers United remain in contention for the President Federation Cup after defeating Rangers 3-2 in a thrilling Round of 32 encounter. The club will now hope its injured players recover quickly ahead of the scheduled clash with Nasarawa United in Awka.
