Chwalinska Sets Up French Open Final Clash

 

Qualifier Maja Chwalinska continued her stunning run at the French Open by securing a place in the first Grand Slam final of her career.

Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska produced another impressive display to defeat Diana Shnaider 7-6(4), 6-4 on Thursday and advance to her maiden Grand Slam final at the French Open. The victory keeps alive an extraordinary campaign for the world number 114, who will now face Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva in the championship match.

Playing under the closed roof of Court Philippe Chatrier, Maja Chwalinska showed remarkable composure and determination throughout a closely fought contest. The 24-year-old delivered her best tennis in the crucial moments, overcoming a spirited challenge from the Russian left-hander.

The opening set featured several momentum swings. Chwalinska’s powerful groundstrokes and precise winners repeatedly put Shnaider under pressure, but the Russian responded strongly after falling behind. Shnaider recovered a second break to level the set at 4-4 and briefly looked capable of turning the match in her favour.

However, Maja Chwalinska refused to lose control. She held serve in a lengthy 11th game with a superb backhand winner before taking charge of the tiebreak. A perfectly judged lob earned her a set point, and she capitalised to move one set away from the final.

The second set remained competitive as both players traded powerful shots and held firm through the early games. With the score finely balanced, Chwalinska secured a crucial break of serve that ultimately proved decisive.

Despite playing her ninth match of the tournament and carrying strapping on her left thigh, the Polish qualifier stayed focused and confident. She closed out the victory on her first match point with a forehand winner, completing another memorable chapter in her remarkable French Open journey.
