UK Tightens Rules for International Students

The United Kingdom has introduced stricter measures that could prevent universities from admitting overseas students if they fail to meet tougher compliance requirements.

Under the revised UK immigration rules, higher education institutions risk losing their sponsorship licences if more than 5% of student visa applications linked to them are refused. The previous threshold stood at 10%, making the new requirement significantly stricter. The changes could affect many international applicants, including those from Nigeria, seeking to study in the UK.

According to the UK Home Office, the reforms are designed to tackle abuse of the visa system across study, work and visitor routes that have been associated with increasing asylum claims. The government said universities will now face closer scrutiny over their performance and compliance standards.

In addition to the lower visa refusal threshold, institutions must achieve a 95% enrolment rate and a 90% course completion rate. These targets are higher than the previous requirements of 90% enrolment and 85% completion. Universities that fail to meet the new benchmarks could face sanctions, including losing the right to recruit international students.

The Home Office said: “High drop-out rates can indicate students have entered the illegal working economy rather than studied whilst high visa rejection rates or low enrolment figures suggest some institutions have not done enough due diligence on applicants.”

The updated UK immigration rules follow earlier restrictions affecting study visa applicants from countries such as Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan. Officials also reported that asylum claims from international students have fallen by 30% since stricter enforcement measures were introduced.

Furthermore, around 306,000 students with expiring visas have been warned to leave the country or face removal if they submit unfounded asylum applications. The UK immigration rules form part of broader efforts to strengthen oversight of the student visa system.
