David Sullivan Resigns Amid False Allegations
David Sullivan has resigned as West Ham's co-chairman, citing false allegations and plans to pursue legal action against them.
David Sullivan, co-chairman of West Ham United, resigned instantly on Saturday following news of what he termed “factually incorrect and entirely false, decades-old allegations” set for publication. The 77-year-old businessman also vacated his role as a director of WH Holding Limited and West Ham, which recently faced relegation from the Premier League on the final matchday of the season.
In a detailed personal statement, Sullivan disclosed that he had learned about these allegations concerning his private life and acknowledged their impending broadcast. He stated, “The false allegations levelled against me have been sensationalised by the media.” Having spent a lifetime in the adult industry, where he met numerous women, Sullivan remarked, “it is sadly inevitable that a small number of improper conduct claims are being made against me.” He firmly declared, “I categorically deny these claims.”
Sullivan further announced his intention to sue the BBC for libel, along with any media outlet that “repeats any libelous allegations.” West Ham responded by stating that none of the allegations pertain to the club or its operations. The team confirmed that Interim Chief Executive Officer Karim Virani would oversee the club’s daily operations, with further updates on the Board of Directors’ future structure to follow.
The decision to relinquish his roles was described by Sullivan as “incredibly painful” but essential to prevent distractions. He emphasized, “None of these allegations relate to my more than 30 years in football; West Ham United has been one of the greatest passions and privileges of my life.” As West Ham prepares for the Championship for the first time since the 2011-12 season, Sullivan expressed, “I am stepping down to apply my full energy and attention on fighting these false allegations.” He confirmed, “I have officially engaged my legal team and we are preparing to issue legal proceedings in respect of each and every false complaint that has been made against me.” Sullivan is determined to seek full legal and public redress on every front.
What are your thoughts on Sullivan’s decision to step down during this challenging time for the club?
