CP Cletus Nwadiogbu has officially assumed duty as the 44th Commissioner of Police in Benue State, promising to enhance security through intelligence-driven policing and stronger community partnerships.
The appointment took effect on 4 June 2026, according to a statement issued by DSP Udeme Edet, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Benue State Police Command. The statement highlighted the new commissioner’s commitment to improving safety and strengthening cooperation between the police and local communities.
A native of Anambra East Local Government Area in Anambra State, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on 10 June 1994. Over more than three decades of service, he has held a wide range of operational, investigative, administrative and leadership positions across the country.
The new commissioner combines extensive policing experience with a strong academic background. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, alongside Master’s and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in International Relations from the University of Uyo. He is also a member of the Nigerian Political Science Association.
Throughout his career, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu completed several professional training programmes, including the Basic Police Mobile Force Course, Advanced Detective Course, Tactical Leadership and Command Course, and Strategic Leadership and Command Course. His previous roles spanned Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Imo, and Taraba states, where he served in key command and operational positions.
He also contributed as one of the pioneer investigators of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in Abuja. Before his posting to Benue, he served as Deputy Commandant of the Nigeria Police Academy (POLAC) in Wudil, Kano State, helping to train and mentor future police officers.
Speaking on his assumption of office, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu reaffirmed his “commitment to improving security and safeguarding lives and property.” He also pledged “unwavering commitment to intelligence-led policing, proactive crime prevention, community partnership and the protection of lives and property across the state.”
The commissioner emphasised that the command would intensify efforts against crime while strengthening collaboration with security agencies, traditional institutions, religious leaders and community stakeholders. He further urged residents to support policing efforts by providing timely and credible information to enhance public safety and security across the state.
