Nyesom Wike has credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, vision and political determination for helping to close Nigeria’s long-standing development gap through major infrastructure investments.
Speaking at the 36th Convocation Ceremony of the University of Port Harcourt on Saturday, where he delivered a lecture titled “Leadership and Infrastructure Development in Nigeria: Lessons for Future Leaders,” the FCT Minister said the scale and direction of ongoing projects across the country reflect a government focused on national transformation.
According to Nyesom Wike, effective leadership is measured by its ability to deliver meaningful results. He argued that infrastructure development remains one of the strongest indicators of good governance, highlighting its importance in driving economic growth, improving social welfare and creating opportunities for citizens.
The minister said President Tinubu has shown the courage to make difficult decisions and mobilise resources towards addressing Nigeria’s infrastructure challenges. He stated: “What the present moment offers is a rare and defining possibility, a window in which purposeful leadership can begin, in earnest, to narrow the enduring gap between Nigeria’s vast potential and its historically uneven performance.”
Wike pointed to several major infrastructure development projects as evidence of the administration’s commitment. These include the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway, the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road, the East-West Road and access roads leading to the Second Niger Bridge. He also highlighted investments in rail transport, including the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri railway corridor and efforts to expand standard gauge rail networks.
Beyond transport infrastructure, the minister referenced ongoing initiatives in the power sector, housing, aviation, broadband expansion, security and education. He praised programmes such as the Presidential Power Initiative, the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, the National Hydrogen Policy and the Nigeria Education Loan Fund.
Discussing economic reforms, Nyesom Wike described the removal of fuel subsidy as one of the administration’s boldest decisions. He argued that the policy has created additional funding opportunities for governments to invest in critical infrastructure development projects.
The former Rivers State governor stressed that the success of infrastructure development should be measured by completed projects and their lasting impact rather than by announcements alone. He added that sustained commitment and policy continuity are essential to achieving long-term national progress.
