INEC Records Over 581,000 New Voters
INEC recorded over 581,000 voter registrations, with women and young Nigerians accounting for most new applicants.
The INEC voter registration exercise recorded 581,298 completed registrations nationwide by 29 May 2026, reflecting strong public participation.
Data released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) showed that 321,921 applicants completed their registration online, while 259,377 finalised the process through physical registration centres. The commission noted that all figures remain provisional pending biometric verification and data validation.
Among the states, Kano State recorded the highest number of registrations with 49,603, followed by Sokoto State with 32,293 and Lagos State with 27,294. Other states with significant figures included Jigawa, Kaduna, Taraba, Niger, Nasarawa, Katsina and Gombe. The Federal Capital Territory recorded 8,350 registrations, while Akwa Ibom posted the lowest figure among participating states with 4,834. Registration activities remain suspended in Ekiti and Osun due to upcoming governorship elections.
The INEC voter registration figures also revealed strong participation from women and young people. Female registrants numbered 304,256, representing 52.34 per cent of the total, while male registrants accounted for 277,042 or 47.66 per cent.
Young Nigerians aged between 18 and 34 dominated the exercise, contributing 409,862 registrations, equivalent to 70.51 per cent of all completed applications. Registrants aged 35 to 49 accounted for 118,906, while those between 50 and 69 years recorded 47,704 registrations. Only 4,826 applicants were aged 70 and above.
Students emerged as the largest occupational group in the INEC voter registration exercise, with 142,667 registrations. Business owners followed with 121,260, while farming and fishing workers accounted for 107,565. Housewives, artisans, traders, civil servants and public servants also recorded substantial participation.
The commission further disclosed that 9,018 persons with disabilities successfully registered. The largest category was classified as “Others” with 4,641 registrations, followed by persons with albinism and those with physical impairments.
The latest INEC voter registration data highlights growing engagement among women, youth and persons with disabilities as preparations continue for future elections across Nigeria.
