Serena Williams Returns for One Final Chapter
Serena Williams returns to competitive tennis, inspired by her children and a desire to enjoy one final journey.
Serena Williams says her children inspired her return to tennis as she prepares for a surprise doubles comeback in London.
Serena Williams has revealed that the opportunity to play in front of her children played a major role in her decision to return to competitive tennis. Four years after appearing to bring her remarkable career to an end, the 23-time Grand Slam champion is set to make a surprise comeback in the doubles event at Queen’s Club in London.
The announcement has generated huge excitement across the tennis world. Supporters gathered around the practice courts on Sunday to watch Williams prepare for her return, eager to see one of the sport’s most celebrated figures back in action.
Williams explained that her daughters, Olympia and Adira, were a key reason behind her decision. While Olympia is old enough to appreciate the occasion, Williams hopes both children will have the chance to watch her compete before she finally steps away from professional tennis.
“For me right now, there are so many elements, you know,” she said.
“It’s really about the kids seeing me play. Olympia is a little bit older, Adira is very young. It’s components like that.”
The former world number one will partner Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko after receiving a wildcard entry into the doubles draw. The pair are scheduled to face third seeds Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez in the opening round. Williams will also compete in the doubles event at the Berlin Open later this month.
Despite renewed interest in a wider Serena Williams comeback, she played down suggestions of a return to singles competition. However, she stopped short of completely dismissing the idea ahead of Wimbledon, a tournament she has won seven times.
Williams admitted she missed the atmosphere and travel that come with professional tennis but stressed that winning is no longer her main motivation. Instead, she views this latest chapter as a chance to enjoy the experience with her family.
“I don’t have anything to prove, I don’t have anything to lose and everything to gain.”
Could Serena Williams’ return inspire one more memorable run on tennis’s biggest stages?
