The election marked the first contested vote at Real Madrid in two decades. Pérez had previously retained the position without opposition in 2009, 2013, 2017, 2021 and 2025. This time, he faced a challenge from Enrique Riquelme, although reports from the club’s official television channel indicated that Pérez won comfortably. The club has not yet published the official vote tally.

The outcome is viewed as significant for the future direction of the club. Reports suggest that Pérez’s re-election could increase the possibility of José Mourinho returning to Real Madrid for a second spell as manager. Mourinho, who led the club between 2010 and 2013, reportedly featured prominently in campaign materials linked to the presidential race.

Following his victory, Florentino Pérez thanked supporters and reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining the club’s success.

“We are going to keep working so that Real Madrid keeps winning more titles,” Pérez told supporters during celebrations that continued into the early hours of Monday.

The 79-year-old businessman first became Real Madrid president in 2000 before leaving the role in 2006. He returned in 2009 and has remained in charge ever since. Under his leadership, the club has enjoyed one of the most successful periods in its history, including winning seven European Cups.

Those triumphs have helped Real Madrid extend its record as the most successful club in European football, with a total of 15 continental titles. Pérez’s latest victory now gives him another opportunity to build on that legacy and guide the club through the coming years.
