Sen Ali Ndume Urges Stronger US Role Against Insurgency

Senator Ali Ndume has called for greater American military involvement in Borno State to help combat insurgent activities.
Former Senate Chief Whip and Senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, has appealed for a stronger United States military presence in northeastern Nigeria, arguing that additional support could help tackle insurgent groups operating in key areas of Borno State.
Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today, Ndume said the United States could make a significant contribution to ongoing counter-insurgency efforts by establishing a military base in the Mandara Mountains. According to him, the location would provide a strategic advantage in monitoring and disrupting activities in nearby insurgent strongholds.
“I’m hoping that they (Donald Trump and his men) could even go far beyond, as I said earlier, when the issue of Americans coming in (was reported) since last year. So I wish they could even establish their base under the Mandara Mountains and drive away all those Boko Haram elements from there.”
The senator noted that the Mandara Mountains could serve as an observation point for monitoring movements around Sambisa Forest and other areas affected by insurgent activities. He argued that advanced surveillance technology available to the United States could strengthen efforts to track and contain armed groups.
Ndume further urged American authorities to consider deploying personnel to Gwoza, describing the area as strategically important in efforts to improve security across the region.
He also explained that disrupting movement routes connecting Sambisa Forest, Lake Chad, Kaga, and surrounding communities would make it more difficult for insurgents to access supplies and maintain operations. According to him, cutting off these routes could significantly reduce the scale of insecurity in the state.
While advocating greater international support, Ndume stressed that the Nigerian Army also requires additional resources and personnel to sustain operations effectively. He maintained that adequate funding, equipment and manpower remain essential for achieving long-term security gains.
His comments come as Nigeria–United States security cooperation continues through various initiatives aimed at addressing security challenges and strengthening regional stability.
