Security forces have detained five suspected criminal informants during separate operations aimed at disrupting support networks in Niger State.
Troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Savannah Shield have arrested five individuals suspected of providing intelligence and support to armed criminal groups during separate operations in Niger State. The arrests led to the recovery of communication devices, cash and other items believed to be linked to criminal activities.
According to a statement issued by Captain Jamilu Muhammed Yahaya, Acting Media Information Officer at the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (North Central), three suspects were apprehended on June 6, 2026, during a routine patrol along the Doro axis in Wawa, located in Borgu Local Government Area.
Preliminary investigations reportedly revealed that the suspects had connections to an armed group operating in Duru, near the boundaries of Kainji Lake National Park. Security personnel recovered two Tecno keypad phones, an MP3 device containing recorded messages linked to an alleged abduction case in Kaduna State, and a cash sum of ₦113,400.
The statement noted that the suspects remain in custody while investigations continue and efforts intensify to identify and apprehend other members of the network.
In a separate operation, troops from the 221 Battalion under Operation Savannah Shield arrested two additional suspects during a patrol around the perimeter of a military cantonment. Initial findings suggested that the individuals had been assigned to gather information about the facility and its activities.
Further examination of one suspect’s mobile phone reportedly uncovered a photograph of a deceased individual dated May 2, 2026, which investigators believe may indicate links to criminal operations. Recovered items included an Android phone, a Tecno keypad phone, a motorcycle and ₦86,100 in cash.
The Operation Savannah Shield arrests highlight ongoing efforts by security agencies to dismantle support structures that enable criminal groups to operate across the region. Military authorities said the suspects and recovered exhibits remain under investigation.
The task force reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining pressure on criminal networks and enhancing security across its operational areas.
