Alia Signs Benue Electricity Law Into Effect

Benue State has enacted a new electricity law designed to improve power supply, attract investment and drive economic growth.

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has signed the Benue State Electricity Law, 2026, marking a significant step towards strengthening electricity generation, transmission and distribution across the state.

The signing ceremony took place on Monday at the Old Banquet Hall of the Government House in Makurdi, according to a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula.

The new legislation establishes a comprehensive framework aimed at improving access to electricity while creating opportunities for greater private sector participation in the power industry. State officials said the law is expected to attract investment, expand energy infrastructure and support long-term economic development.

Under the Benue State Electricity Law, efforts will focus on enhancing power supply to homes, businesses, schools and healthcare facilities. Authorities believe improved electricity access will encourage industrial growth and create a more favourable environment for investors seeking opportunities in the state.

The government also noted that better electricity infrastructure could reduce the heavy reliance on generators and alternative energy sources. This is expected to lower operating costs for businesses, improve productivity and strengthen competitiveness across various sectors of the economy.

Another key aspect of the legislation is the protection of electricity consumers. The law introduces measures aimed at promoting fair billing practices, improving service delivery and ensuring more effective resolution of consumer complaints. Officials said these provisions will help build trust and accountability within the power sector.

The Benue electricity reform initiative also prioritises rural electrification. The government plans to extend power infrastructure to underserved communities, with expected benefits for healthcare services, education, agriculture and security.

According to state authorities, the law will play a crucial role in accelerating industrialisation, creating employment opportunities and improving living standards for residents. They expressed confidence that the legislation will support sustainable economic growth and position Benue as a more attractive destination for investment.
