Wolves Part Ways With Edwards After Relegation
Wolves have sacked Rob Edwards after relegation and are preparing to appoint a new head coach.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have dismissed manager Rob Edwards after a disappointing campaign ended with the club’s relegation from the Premier League.
Wolverhampton Wanderers confirmed on Thursday that Rob Edwards has left his role as head coach following the club’s drop to the Championship. The decision comes after a difficult season in which Wolves finished at the bottom of the Premier League table with just 20 points.
The club appointed Edwards in November on a three-and-a-half-year deal after securing his departure from Middlesbrough, which had been reluctant to lose the Welsh manager. Despite arriving with high expectations, Edwards was unable to turn around the team’s fortunes. Wolves won only three of their 38 league matches and scored just 27 goals throughout the campaign.
In a statement, Wolverhampton Wanderers said: “Following a comprehensive review at the conclusion of the season, the club has determined that a change in leadership is necessary as Wolves enters the next stage of its development.”
The club’s relegation in April brought an end to its eight-year stay in the English top flight. Executive chairman Nathan Shi explained that the decision followed a detailed assessment of the football operation.
“This has been an extremely difficult decision. Following the end of the season, we undertook a thorough review of every aspect of the football operation,” Shi said.
“Our decision was not about character, professionalism or dedication. It was about determining what we believe gives Wolves the strongest opportunity to move forward from a sporting perspective.”
Edwards has strong ties to Wolverhampton Wanderers, having played for the club between 2004 and 2008. He also began his managerial journey there, serving briefly as interim manager in 2016 and later coaching the Under-23 side before joining England’s youth set-up.
The former Luton Town manager previously guided the club to the Premier League and also held managerial roles at Forest Green Rovers and Watford. Wolves are now searching for a replacement, with reports linking Cesar Peixoto of Gil Vicente to the vacancy.
