Fire Guts Shops and Offices in Kano

A late-night fire outbreak in Kano destroyed several properties, including offices and commercial shops, along Murtala Mohammed Way in Fagge Local Government Area.

The incident occurred on Thursday night near First City Monument Bank and reportedly began at a salvage yard known locally as Takumbo Market before spreading to nearby buildings. According to a statement issued by Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, emergency responders received a distress call at about 10:54 p.m. from fire service personnel Ibrahim Sabo.

Following the alert, firefighters from the Service Headquarters and other metropolitan stations quickly mobilised to the scene. Upon arrival, they found a one-storey building and an adjoining commercial area measuring approximately 300 by 200 feet already engulfed in flames.

Preliminary findings showed that the blaze started within the salvage yard, where large quantities of goods and valuable property were destroyed before the fire spread to surrounding structures. The incident affected the upper floor of Kanawa Building, damaging two offices, two parlours, two toilets and a kitchen. It also destroyed two stores located on the ground floor of TUSRAYS Nigeria Limited.

Investigators attributed the fire outbreak in Kano to an electrical spark. Authorities said the rapid response of firefighters helped contain the blaze and prevent further destruction in the busy commercial area.

The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, urged residents and business owners to follow safety guidelines and properly maintain electrical installations to reduce the risk of similar incidents. He also encouraged members of the public to report fires immediately so emergency teams can respond swiftly and limit damage.

Fortunately, no casualties were recorded in the fire outbreak in Kano, although the incident left significant property losses in its wake.
