World Cup: Balogun Brace Powers USA Past Paraguay

Folarin Balogun scored twice as the USA World Cup victory campaign gained momentum with an impressive 4-1 win over Paraguay in their Group D clash at SoFi Stadium in California.

The United States made a dream start and took the lead after only seven minutes. Paraguay midfielder Damian Bobadilla accidentally turned the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a dangerous cut-back from Weston McKennie.

The early breakthrough allowed the hosts to dominate possession and apply sustained pressure on Paraguay’s defence. The South Americans struggled to contain the attacking threat of the United States, and Folarin Balogun made them pay with two first-half goals that put Mauricio Pochettino’s side firmly in control before the interval.

Despite enjoying a comfortable advantage, the Americans were forced into a change at half-time when star forward Christian Pulisic was withdrawn by head coach Mauricio Pochettino. The hosts were unable to extend their lead immediately after the restart, but they continued to control much of the contest.

Paraguay briefly threatened a comeback when substitute Mauricio reduced the deficit in the 74th minute. However, the goal proved to be little more than a consolation as the visitors failed to create enough opportunities to seriously trouble the American defence.

The USA World Cup victory was sealed in dramatic fashion moments before full-time when Giovanni Reyna found the net to make it 4-1 and cap an excellent performance from the co-hosts.

The result temporarily moves the United States to the top of Group D as they await the outcome of the later match between Turkiye and Australia. With Balogun in fine form and the team showing attacking confidence, the Americans have made a strong statement in their bid to progress deep into the tournament.
