Serena Returns to Wimbledon Singles

Serena Williams will make her long-awaited return to singles action at Wimbledon after receiving the tournament’s final wildcard entry.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion is set to play her first singles match in four years when this year’s Wimbledon begins on June 29. The Serena Williams comeback follows the announcement by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, which awarded the 44-year-old the final wildcard for the prestigious grass-court event.

The American legend had already secured a place at the tournament after she and her sister, Venus Williams, received a wildcard for the doubles competition. A seven-time Wimbledon champion, Serena Williams last appeared in singles at the tournament in 2022, when she suffered a first-round defeat to Harmony Tan of France.

Later that year, she exited the US Open in the third round after losing to Ajla Tomljanovic. At the time, she avoided describing her decision as retirement, saying instead that she was “evolving” away from the sport.

Interest in a possible return grew when Serena re-entered the tennis anti-doping testing pool last year. Those rumours gained momentum in recent months as she returned to competitive action on the doubles court.

The Serena Williams comeback became official when she competed at the Queen’s Club Championships alongside Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko. The pair won their opening match before Mboko’s injury in the singles event forced them to withdraw from the tournament. Serena also featured in doubles at the Berlin Open, partnering Karolina Muchova of Czechia in a first-round loss.

With Wimbledon approaching, attention will now focus on how the former world number one performs in her first singles appearance since stepping away from the tour. The Serena Williams comeback adds another compelling storyline to this year’s championship.
