As the rainy season continues, Benue SEMA has advised residents across Benue State to take extra precautions against snake bites. The warning follows reports that several snakebite victims recently received treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH).
The agency explained that the threat is not limited to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. Instead, it affects people across the state, especially those living in rural communities and areas where farming activities are common. According to Benue SEMA, snakes become more active during the rainy season, which increases the chances of residents encountering them in homes, farms and surrounding environments.
To reduce the risk, Benue SEMA encouraged residents to keep their surroundings tidy and remove bushes that could provide shelter for snakes. The agency also advised people to remain careful when travelling along village roads, working on farms or walking through bush paths.
In addition, residents should wear protective footwear while carrying out farming activities. The agency recommended using flashlights when moving outdoors at night, as better visibility can help prevent accidental encounters with snakes.
Benue SEMA further stressed the importance of seeking immediate medical attention after any snake bite. Quick treatment can improve outcomes and reduce the risk of serious complications. The agency noted that community awareness and preventive measures remain vital during this period.
