UK Praises Tinubu’s Economic Reform Efforts

The United Kingdom has applauded the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu, saying they are beginning to produce measurable results despite initial difficulties.

The United Kingdom has expressed confidence in the economic direction of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, noting that recent policy reforms are showing positive signs of progress. Speaking during the 4th UK–Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership (SDP4) Dialogue in Abuja, Jonathan Powell, the UK National Security Adviser, described Nigeria’s economic transformation as evidence that challenging but necessary reforms can deliver long-term benefits.

Powell said the reforms are supporting economic growth and recovery, while strengthening Nigeria’s position on the African continent. He referred to Nigeria as an African superpower and reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to deepening cooperation with the country across key sectors.

According to Powell, Nigeria remains the United Kingdom’s most significant partner in Africa due to its strategic role in regional development, stability and security. He added that the country continues to play an important part in addressing challenges affecting the wider region.

Also speaking at the event, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu highlighted the Federal Government’s commitment to democratic governance, human rights and the rule of law as central elements in tackling insecurity.

Ribadu warned that emerging security threats, including cybercrime, the misuse of artificial intelligence, and illicit financial networks, are changing the global security landscape. He stressed the need for stronger international partnerships, enhanced intelligence-sharing and increased investment in technology to address these growing challenges.

The security adviser also welcomed ongoing UK support in cybersecurity and information resilience. He noted that cooperation between both countries has expanded considerably since the launch of the UK–Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership in 2022.

According to Ribadu, the partnership has strengthened collaboration in counterterrorism, cybersecurity, maritime security, crisis management and intelligence-sharing, while improving Nigeria’s operational and institutional capabilities.
