US President Donald Trump has warned that countries imposing digital services taxes could face 100 per cent tariffs on goods exported to the United States.

The warning comes as Donald Trump continues to push for changes to trade policies that he believes unfairly target American businesses. In a post on his Truth Social platform, he said countries enforcing digital services tax measures would face steep trade penalties, regardless of any existing agreements.

“Any Country that imposes such a Tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America,” Trump said, adding that “this TARIFF will supersede Trade Deals made with the Country, whether implemented, signed, or not.”

The latest warning follows the recent approval of a trade agreement between the European Union and the United States. EU member states backed the deal negotiated last year, which limits tariffs on European imports entering the US to 15 per cent.

Despite that agreement, Donald Trump has repeatedly criticised what he describes as non-tariff trade barriers. He argues that European regulations covering technology and environmental standards create obstacles for American exports and place US companies at a disadvantage.

Earlier this month, Trump also threatened to impose a 100 per cent tariff on French wine and champagne unless France withdrew its digital services tax on technology companies.

France introduced the tax in 2019, applying a three per cent levy on revenue earned within the country by major technology firms. The measure affects several large American companies, including Facebook, Amazon, Apple and Alphabet, the parent company of Google.

The renewed tariff warning has added fresh uncertainty to US-EU trade relations, particularly as discussions continue over digital taxation and broader trade policies. Do you think tariff threats will encourage countries to reconsider digital services taxes?
