DSS Clears Kaduna Farmer, Awards Compensation
A Kaduna farmer regained freedom after a DSS review cleared terrorism allegations and approved compensation to help rebuild his livelihood.
The Department of State Services has released a Kaduna farmer after clearing him of claims linking him to Boko Haram following a detailed internal review.
Nura Idris, a farmer and livestock rearer from Soba Local Government Area in Kaduna State, has regained his freedom after the Department of State Services (DSS) found no evidence connecting him to terrorism. The Kaduna farmer was first arrested by another security agency in Suleja, Niger State, in June 2024 over suspected terrorist links before officials transferred him to DSS custody.
After completing its investigation, the DSS concluded that the allegations lacked evidence. Following the findings, Director-General Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi ordered Idris’s immediate release. He also approved N3 million compensation to help the Kaduna farmer meet his immediate needs. In addition, the Service pledged support to help him rebuild his farming and livestock business.
Speaking after leaving custody, Idris thanked the DSS leadership for its support. He said, “I thank the DGSS for his kindness. I was well treated in DSS custody, and I pray that Allah rewards the DGSS immensely,” adding that the financial assistance would help him begin again.
His father, Yusuf Idris, also praised the DSS Director-General for the compassionate decision. He said the family would use the money wisely.
Security sources said the Department of State Services began the review to reassess inherited and long-running detention cases. The aim is to identify people held without sufficient grounds and secure their release. The sources added that the Service also offers medical, psychological and reintegration support, including help with setting up businesses for some former detainees.
They further revealed that officials have reviewed more than 30 cases under the exercise and paid over N300 million in compensation, describing the effort as part of the DSS commitment to accountability, justice and protecting citizens’ rights.
