Muchova Claims Bad Homburg Title After Osaka Retires

Karolina Muchova secured the Bad Homburg Open crown after Naomi Osaka retired because of an ankle injury during Saturday’s final. The result handed Muchova her first career grass-court title and continued her impressive 2026 season ahead of Wimbledon.

Playing in the first grass-court final of her career, four-time Grand Slam champion Osaka struggled with the injury from the opening stages. She fell behind early and received medical treatment after dropping the first three games. Although she returned to the court, the Japanese star remained clearly uncomfortable and lost the opening set 6-1.

Osaka briefly lifted the crowd with a brilliant back-spinning drop shot to claim her only game of the set. However, after losing the opening game of the second set on Muchova’s serve, she spoke with her coach before informing the umpire that she could not continue.

The victory marks another milestone in Karolina Muchova’s strong campaign. Earlier this year, she won the Qatar Open in February and reached the final of the Stuttgart WTA event in April. The latest success will also move Karolina Muchova back into the world’s top 10, with the Czech player set to rise to ninth in the updated rankings on Monday.

The match started earlier than scheduled at 0900 GMT because of the extreme heat, but temperatures had already reached 36 degrees Celsius when play began.

With Wimbledon starting on Monday, Karolina Muchova will enter the tournament as the 10th seed, while Naomi Osaka is seeded 14th despite concerns over her fitness.
