Canada Secure Historic World Cup Knockout Victory

Canada reached the World Cup last 16 for the first time after a dramatic late win over South Africa.

Canada football history was made on Sunday as the team defeated South Africa 1-0 in the first knockout match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Stephen Eustaquio scoring a stunning stoppage-time winner.

Eustaquio collected the ball near the edge of the South African penalty area before firing a powerful long-range strike past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to seal a memorable victory.

The result marked Canada’s first-ever appearance in the World Cup round of 16 and ended a tense match where both teams struggled to create clear chances. South Africa appeared willing to wait for extra time and a possible penalty shootout, but their late efforts to find an equaliser were unsuccessful.

Canada football will now prepare for a quarter-final place battle against either the Netherlands or Morocco on July 4 in Houston.

After the final whistle, Canada manager Jesse Marsch praised his players for their belief and commitment. “It’s about the two years we’ve been together,” Canada coach Jesse ‌Marsch told the team in a huddle after the final whistle.

“Think about how we talked about sticking to the plan… you guys showing your character. You guys are Canadian heroes ‌here.”

The opening half was closely fought, with both teams competing in their first-ever World Cup knockout match. Canada came closest before the break when Moise Bombito’s header was cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba, before Tajon Buchanan’s follow-up effort hit Williams.

Canada also appealed for a penalty after Richie Laryea went down inside the box, but a VAR review confirmed the decision to continue play.

The Canadians continued pushing after the restart, with chances falling to Tani Oluwaseyi and Jonathan David, but South Africa’s defence held firm until Eustaquio delivered the decisive moment.
