Sinner Battles Into Wimbledon Second Round

Jannik Sinner overcame a determined challenge from Miomir Kecmanovic to begin his Wimbledon title defence with a hard-fought five-set victory on Monday.

The world number one recovered from a slow start to defeat the Serbian 4-6, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-3, securing his place in the second round. It was Sinner’s first competitive grass-court match of the season after his early exit from the French Open last month.

The victory also marked Sinner’s 94th Grand Slam win, drawing him level with Nicola Pietrangeli for the most Grand Slam match victories by an Italian player.

The opening set raised concerns after Miomir Kecmanovic took an early advantage, reminding many of Sinner’s unexpected second-round defeat at Roland Garros. However, the Italian quickly regained his rhythm in the second set, sealing it with a powerful ace to level the contest.

The match became even more demanding in the third set when Sinner fell on court and appeared uncomfortable afterwards. He was later seen with what looked like blood on his shoe following a separate incident. Despite continuing to compete, he lost the set in a tie-break after holding a strong position.

The Wimbledon champion responded impressively, dominating the fourth set to force a deciding fifth. Sinner then took control of the match, producing a composed display to complete the comeback and secure victory.

The four-time Grand Slam champion will now face Portugal’s Nuno Borges in the second round as he continues his bid to retain the Wimbledon title.
