WhatsApp Introduces Usernames for Better Privacy

WhatsApp has introduced a new username feature that will let users start conversations without sharing their phone numbers, giving them greater privacy and more control over personal information.

The messaging platform began rolling out username reservations worldwide on 29 June ahead of the feature’s full release later this year. Once available, users who enable the option will be able to connect with new contacts through a unique username instead of revealing their phone number. The change is designed to make conversations with classmates, neighbours, event participants and community members more private.

According to WhatsApp, the username feature forms part of its wider effort to strengthen privacy for its more than three billion users across the world.

“When someone new walks into your life, sharing a phone number can feel like a big step because a phone number is personal and tied to so many parts of your life. Sometimes you just want to chat without handing over your digits.”

The company said users can reserve their preferred username before the feature becomes widely available, allowing them to secure their chosen identity early. It also explained that usernames are intended to improve privacy rather than function like social media profiles.

“There is no directory to browse and no suggestions. People will need to know your exact username to contact you for the first time,” the company said.

To provide additional protection, WhatsApp is introducing an optional username key that requires first-time contacts to enter a unique code before sending a message. The platform also includes a username generator to help users find available options.

For creators, small businesses and organisations, the username feature allows matching usernames already used on Instagram or Facebook, creating a consistent identity across Meta’s platforms. Users can reserve a username through Settings > Account > Username, with availability expanding gradually through in-app notifications.
