Morocco booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties following a thrilling 1-1 draw at the Monterrey Stadium.

The Morocco World Cup campaign received another major boost as Ismael Saibari converted the decisive penalty after both teams remained level at the end of extra time. The victory sets up a Round of 16 clash against Canada in Houston on 4 July.

The penalty shootout proved tense, with Neil El Aynaoui and Achraf Hakimi missing for Morocco. The Netherlands also struggled from the spot, as Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville all failed to convert their penalties, allowing Morocco to secure victory.

Earlier in the match, Cody Gakpo gave the Dutch the lead in the 72nd minute after being set up by Summerville shortly after the second-half hydration break. As the Netherlands looked set to progress, Issa Diop headed home in the first minute of stoppage time to level the score and force extra time.

Neither side could find a winner during the additional 30 minutes, leaving the contest to be decided by penalties. Ismael Saibari kept his composure to score the winning spot-kick and keep the Morocco World Cup dream alive.

The defeat marked the Netherlands’ fourth penalty shootout loss in FIFA World Cup history, equalling Spain’s record for the most shootout defeats at the tournament. Despite taking the lead during normal time, the Dutch were unable to hold on as Morocco produced another determined display to advance.

Can Morocco continue this impressive World Cup run and overcome Canada in the Round of 16?
