FG Plans Adire Uniform for NYSC Members
Federal Government plans an NYSC Adire uniform while reviewing corps member postings to support local industries and improve deployment processes.
The Federal Government says a proposed NYSC Adire uniform will support local industries, strengthen the textile sector and keep public spending within Nigeria.
The Federal Government has explained that its proposal to replace the traditional National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) khaki uniform with Adire fabric forms part of a wider plan to boost local production and encourage economic growth. Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande said the NYSC Adire uniform is more than a change in appearance. He described it as a step towards creating jobs, supporting Nigerian businesses and strengthening local value chains.
According to the minister, Adire fabric is already produced in states such as Ogun and Kwara. He said the government wants public funds to benefit local manufacturers instead of leaving the country. He added, “It’s Adire? Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have in Ogun, we have in Kwara, we have textile Industry. Let us put our money back into the country.”
Beyond the proposed NYSC Adire uniform, the government is also reviewing how corps members are posted after orientation camp. Ayodele Olawande said the planned reforms aim to make deployments more organised and better aligned with current security conditions. Under the proposal, postings would follow a clearer process based on each corps member’s experience during orientation rather than being handled arbitrarily.
The minister also said officials are examining which reforms can take effect under existing laws and which would need approval from the National Assembly. He noted that discussions with lawmakers and the presidency will be necessary before some changes can move forward.
Although the reform process has already started, Ayodele Olawande said there is no fixed date for implementation. He stressed that large-scale reforms take time but remain important for the future of the NYSC Adire uniform and the wider scheme.
