Retirement Talk Grows Around Cristiano Ronaldo

Fresh speculation surrounds Cristiano Ronaldo retirement after his sister suggested the Portugal captain could soon bring his international career to an end.

Speculation over Cristiano Ronaldo retirement intensified ahead of Portugal’s FIFA World Cup 2026 match against Croatia, after his sister, Katia Aveiro, suggested that the football icon may soon step away from international football. Speaking to SportTV before the match, she hinted that Ronaldo’s remarkable journey with Portugal could be approaching its conclusion.

“The info I have, from a reliable source, he could say goodbye. Enjoy it while it lasts. It won’t be today, but soon. I think this will be his last dance,” Aveiro said.

Cristiano Ronaldo made his debut for Portugal in August 2003 at the age of 18. Since then, he has become the country’s all-time leader in appearances with 232 matches, placing him 86 games ahead of João Moutinho. He is also Portugal’s highest goalscorer with 145 goals, well ahead of Pauleta, who scored 47.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is one of only three players to have featured in six FIFA World Cup tournaments. At 41 years and 147 days, he also became the oldest outfield player to start a World Cup knockout match. Although he led Portugal to its first major international title by winning the UEFA European Championship in 2016, the FIFA World Cup trophy has remained out of reach.

Despite the growing Cristiano Ronaldo retirement rumours, the veteran forward has not confirmed that he plans to retire from international football.

Portugal coach Roberto Martínez recently dismissed concerns about Ronaldo’s future, praising his dedication and desire to continue competing at the highest level.

“He’s earned ‌it. I have worked with many players that have won a Champions League or a Ballon d’Or, and the next day they lose their ‌appetite. What we have with Ronaldo is an example of a different mentality,” Martínez said.
