Switzerland booked a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 round of 16 after a convincing 2-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday. Goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye sealed the win as the Swiss side continued its impressive campaign.

The breakthrough came through the impressive play of Johan Manzambi, who delivered another standout performance. The 20-year-old burst down the left wing before sending a low cross into the penalty area for Breel Embolo to finish with confidence, giving Switzerland the lead.

The assist was Manzambi’s second of the tournament. The young midfielder has also scored three goals in four World Cup appearances, despite starting only two matches, underlining his growing influence during Switzerland World Cup campaign.

The Swiss side extended its advantage just one minute into the second half. Dan Ndoye reacted quickly after the ball fell kindly to him on the edge of the box and calmly guided his effort beyond Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane, effectively putting the result beyond doubt.

The victory offers Switzerland another opportunity to improve on its recent World Cup performances. The team was eliminated in the round of 16 in 2006, 2014, 2018 and 2022, and has not reached the quarter-finals since 1954, despite making the last eight on three previous occasions.

After progressing, Switzerland will remain in Vancouver, where it will face either Colombia or Ghana in the round of 16 on Tuesday as the team looks to continue its Switzerland World Cup journey.
