Eala Stuns Iga Swiatek in Wimbledon Upset

Reigning champion Iga Swiatek suffered a shock exit from Wimbledon on Saturday after Alexandra Eala delivered a composed straight-sets win on Centre Court.

The Filipino teenager fought through a tense 84-minute opening set before securing a 7-6 (11/9), 6-2 victory over the stunned Polish star in the third round of the Wimbledon Championships.

The result sends Eala into the last 16 and marks one of the biggest breakthroughs of her career on the grass courts of London.

Swiatek, a six-time Grand Slam champion, struggled to find her rhythm and committed 44 unforced errors as she failed to recover from a tight first-set tiebreak. The defeat marks her earliest exit at a major since another third-round loss at Wimbledon two years ago.

Eala, ranked 29th, showed no fear against the former world number one and handled the pressure with maturity. She had already made history earlier in the week by becoming the first player from the Philippines in the Open era to reach the third round of a Grand Slam.

Speaking after the match, she said: “It’s difficult to describe. I’m in the second week of a Slam and it’s incredible for me,” while also reflecting on her journey from training in the Philippines with her family.

The young star also added: “I’m really emotional and maybe for someone like Iga who has won so many Slams, or someone like Serena or Venus (Williams), this achievement might seem small,” but stressed what it meant personally.

Eala now moves on to face former finalist Jasmine Paolini, with hopes of becoming the first player from the Philippines to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final since 1953.

After a marathon first set filled with missed chances on both sides, Eala took full control in the second set, racing into a 4-0 lead before closing out the match on her third match point.
