Pegula Fights Back to Reach Wimbledon Quarter-finals
Jessica Pegula recovered from a slow start to beat Iva Jovic and book another place in the Wimbledon quarter-finals.
Jessica Pegula produced a strong comeback to defeat fellow American Iva Jovic and secure a place in the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the second time in her career.
The fourth seed recovered from losing the opening set to claim a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory on Sunday. The win also matched her best performance at Wimbledon, where she continues her bid for a maiden title.
The opening set proved difficult for Jessica Pegula, with both players struggling to hold serve in a contest that featured seven service breaks. However, the experienced American raised her level as the match progressed, improving the consistency of her serve and reducing unforced errors.
After dropping the opening game of the second set, Jessica Pegula responded by winning four consecutive games to seize control of the match. Her improved serving and confident shot-making left little room for Iva Jovic to recover.
The 18-year-old Jovic, seeded 16th, found it increasingly difficult to match Pegula’s intensity in the deciding set as the former US Open finalist comfortably closed out the victory.
“That was really tough,” Pegula said after the match.
“Iva’s a great player and brings lots of energy and intensity and I just couldn’t find my serve in the first set even though I wasn’t playing badly.
“Luckily I started to serve better.”
The result sends Jessica Pegula into another Wimbledon quarter-finals, marking yet another deep run at a Grand Slam. She has now reached at least the quarter-final stage of all four major tournaments during her career.
Pegula could face another American in the last eight if Coco Gauff defeats Belinda Bencic later on Sunday.
Can Jessica Pegula build on this comeback and reach her first Wimbledon semi-final?
