Gauff Reaches Maiden Wimbledon Quarter-final

Coco Gauff secured her first Wimbledon quarter-final after battling past Belinda Bencic 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a thrilling contest that finished just two minutes before the tournament’s 11 pm curfew.

The seventh seed overcame a slow start to claim victory under the roof on Court One after both players endured a lengthy wait before the match began. Although Belinda Bencic started more confidently, Coco Gauff grew stronger as the contest progressed, producing 35 winners compared with Bencic’s 19. She also recorded 46 unforced errors and nine double faults but made the decisive shots when they mattered most.

“I’m super happy to be in the quarters finally – ‌I ⁠don’t know how many tries it’s been,” Gauff said after the match.

Bencic, the 11th seed, claimed the opening set on her third set point after Gauff sent a return into the net. However, the American responded impressively in the second set by breaking serve twice while surrendering her own serve only once. A well-executed drop shot followed by a superb lob helped force the match into a deciding set.

Playing with greater confidence, Coco Gauff controlled much of the final set and consistently found the corners of the court to keep Bencic under pressure. With the Wimbledon curfew approaching, Gauff earned match point with a powerful smash before sealing victory with a strong serve that her opponent could not return.

“I was looking at the clock in ‌the last service game and on that match point I was going for serve and volley as I was wanting to end the point.

“I’m not used to racing for ⁠time as we’re not used to having to finish by a certain ⁠time.”

The victory sends Coco Gauff into the Wimbledon quarter-final, where she will face fellow American Jessica Pegula. Gauff said she believes this was her strongest performance of the tournament and is eager to continue her run.
