Carlos Queiroz Steps Down as Ghana Coach

Carlos Queiroz has resigned as Ghana head coach after the Black Stars’ FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign ended in the first knockout round.

The 73-year-old coach confirmed his departure on Sunday, bringing an end to a three-month spell in charge of the national team. Carlos Queiroz was appointed in April after replacing Otto Addo, who left the role 72 days before the tournament. The World Cup marked Queiroz’s fifth consecutive appearance as a head coach at football’s biggest competition.

Reflecting on his time with Ghana, Queiroz shared an emotional message on Instagram.

“I leave this journey with ‌pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those ‌who always wanted more. Reaching a higher level should never be the ⁠destination—it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions,” ‌Queiroz posted on Instagram.

During the FIFA World Cup 2026, Ghana defeated Panama, drew with England, and lost to Croatia to finish third in Group L. The results were enough to secure qualification for the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s eight best third-placed teams.

The Black Stars’ campaign ended in the Round of 32 after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia, bringing Queiroz’s brief tenure to a close.

Before the World Cup, Carlos Queiroz managed Ghana in just one friendly match, leaving him limited time to prepare the squad before the global tournament.

His departure means the Ghana Football Association will now begin the search for a new head coach as the team prepares for future international competitions.
