Jonathan Dismisses Alleged ₦500bn Election Offer Claim Against Obi
Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed reports alleging a ₦500bn offer to influence his 2027 presidential ambition as false and misleading.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed reports claiming he was offered ₦500 billion to contest the 2027 presidential election against Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, describing the allegation as false and baseless.
In a statement on Sunday, his Special Adviser on Media, Ikechukwu Eze, said the report circulating on social media platforms, including Facebook, was fabricated and should be disregarded by the public.
According to Eze, the claim lacked basic details expected of credible reporting, including when and where the alleged offer was made, and the identities of those involved.
“The report failed to state where or when Jonathan allegedly made such a claim, who was present or who purportedly made the alleged offer,” Eze said.
He added that the story bore “all the hallmarks of fake news deliberately crafted” to mislead Nigerians and drag the former president into political controversy ahead of the next election cycle.
Eze also clarified that Goodluck Jonathan had not made any statement suggesting he was offered money to influence the 2027 presidential race or undermine any candidate.
“Jonathan has not made any statement suggesting he was offered money to contest the presidency or undermine any candidate,” he stated.
He urged Nigerians to verify sensitive political claims before sharing them, warning that election periods often trigger a rise in misinformation and false attributions.
The denial comes amid ongoing speculation about Jonathan’s possible return to active politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Reports in recent months have suggested that the former president may be considering a comeback under a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), though no official confirmation has been made.
The controversy over the alleged nomination and purported convention endorsement has further fuelled political discussions, even as key election deadlines draw closer.
