Oluremi Tinubu Promotes Home Gardening for Food Security

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has encouraged Nigerians to embrace home gardening, saying it can improve household food security, reduce food costs and provide families with fresh produce.

Speaking after harvesting vegetables from her garden at the State House in Abuja on Monday, Oluremi Tinubu urged households to make good use of available spaces by growing vegetables and other crops for family consumption. She said home gardening offers a simple and practical way to supplement daily food needs while encouraging healthier eating habits.

The First Lady stressed that producing food at home can help families become more self-reliant and ease the financial pressure of feeding. She added that home gardening remains an effective way to improve access to fresh vegetables and called on Nigerians to adopt the practice as part of their daily lives.

According to Oluremi Tinubu, food production should not rest solely on government efforts but should also begin within individual households. Her message aligns with the Federal Government’s wider drive to strengthen agriculture, increase food production and encourage greater self-sufficiency across the country.

The renewed call comes after the First Lady previously faced criticism over comments on small business opportunities. During an earlier interaction with journalists, she highlighted government support for entrepreneurs through grants rather than loans.

She said, “To start akara business doesn’t take a lot of money. To start roasting corn or kuli-kuli doesn’t take much. We didn’t give them a loan, we gave them a grant. We have encouraged Nigerians as best as we could. I also gave to several others.”

Her latest appeal places renewed attention on home gardening as one of the practical ways families can contribute to improving food availability while supporting the country’s agricultural goals.
