Lagos Expands Fire Safety and Emergency Response

Lagos State has strengthened its fire safety and emergency response system with new fire stations, modern equipment and additional personnel to improve public safety across the state.

Speaking at the third Lagos International Fire Safety Conference in Ikeja, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Deputy Governor Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, said the administration had established 11 new fire stations, deployed 62 modern firefighting vehicles, rebuilt the headquarters of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and recruited 150 new firefighters who are currently receiving training at the upgraded Fire Academy.

The governor also revealed that emergency response agencies rescued more than 1,900 people in 2025 and prevented property losses estimated at ₦118 billion. He said the government remains focused on improving fire safety through stronger emergency response, preventive measures, stricter regulation, public awareness and closer collaboration with key stakeholders.

According to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the state has stepped up enforcement of fire safety regulations by carrying out stricter inspections and implementing the Fire Safety Levy. He said, “The compliance must go beyond obtaining certificates to ensuring that safety equipment and systems remain fully functional.”

Sanwo-Olu explained that the latest investments have increased the number of fire stations in Lagos State to 29, while new stations are under construction in Yaba, Ikotun and Oworonshoki. He added that the expansion reflects the success of the state’s integrated emergency management strategy.

The governor also announced the Fire Marshal Programme, which will train volunteers in homes, schools, markets, offices, places of worship and industrial facilities to identify fire risks early, coordinate evacuations and support professional responders before emergencies worsen.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property, Babajide Sanwo-Olu promised continued investment in personnel, equipment and emergency services. He also urged property developers, business owners and residents to adopt stronger safety practices, noting that prevention remains the most effective way to reduce disaster risks.
