AS Monaco Name Filipe Luis New Head Coach
AS Monaco appoint Filipe Luis as head coach after his trophy-filled Flamengo spell and a difficult end in Brazil.
Filipe Luis takes charge at Monaco after a successful spell in Brazil, signing a contract that runs until June 2028.
AS Monaco have appointed Filipe Luis as their new head coach, with the former defender returning to Europe after an impressive coaching period at Flamengo. The Ligue 1 club confirmed the appointment on Monday as they look to begin a new chapter following a disappointing season.
The Filipe Luis appointment comes after Monaco dismissed Sebastien Pocognoli when the team finished seventh in the league and missed out on Champions League qualification. The 40-year-old manager has signed a deal that will keep him at the club until June 2028.
The Filipe Luis appointment follows a successful run with Flamengo, where he became head coach in 2024 and won five trophies in just over a year. His achievements included the Brazilian Cup in 2024, before adding the Copa Libertadores and Brazilian Championship double the following season.
Despite those achievements, Flamengo removed Luis in March after the club recorded its worst start to a campaign in 10 years. The difficult period included defeats against Corinthians in the Brazilian Super Cup and Argentina’s Lanús in the South American Recopa.
In a surprising moment, Flamengo dismissed Luis only hours after his team defeated Madureira 8–0 and reached the Rio de Janeiro state championship final.
A former Atletico Madrid defender, Luis made 333 appearances for the Spanish side, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Europa League. He also played for Chelsea and helped the club win the Premier League title in 2015.
Can Filipe Luis bring his winning mentality to Monaco and guide the club back towards European success?
