Sinner Ends Struff’s Wimbledon Dream

Defending champion Jannik Sinner produced a commanding display to defeat Jan-Lennard Struff and book his place in the Wimbledon semi-finals on Tuesday.

The Jannik Sinner Wimbledon campaign gathered further momentum as the world number one overcame the big-serving German 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-3, ending one of the tournament’s most inspiring stories.

Struff, ranked world number 74, had enjoyed a memorable run at the All England Club. In his 47th Grand Slam appearance, the 36-year-old became the oldest man in the professional era to reach his first major quarter-final. However, he found little answer to Sinner’s consistency and composure.

The German had fired 100 aces on his way to the last eight and added 12 more against Sinner. Despite that powerful serving, the Italian remained in control for most of the contest and handled the pressure with confidence.

A crucial break of serve gave Sinner a 6-5 lead in the opening set before he served it out. The second set proved more competitive, with Struff earning a set point in the 10th game. Sinner responded with an unreturnable serve to stay level before dominating the tiebreak to move within one set of victory.

The Jannik Sinner Wimbledon title defence stayed on course as he wrapped up the match in the third set, sealing his place in a 10th Grand Slam semi-final when Struff sent a service return long.

Sinner, who has not added another Grand Slam title since lifting the Wimbledon trophy 12 months ago, will now face either Novak Djokovic or Felix Auger-Aliassime for a place in the final.

The Jannik Sinner Wimbledon performance underlined the Italian’s status as one of the tournament favourites as he continues his pursuit of another major title.
