Novak Djokovic defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime in a thrilling five-set contest to reach another Wimbledon semifinal.
The 39-year-old Serbian battled for five hours and 15 minutes before winning 7-6(10), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(10-4) against the Canadian on Tuesday. The victory secured Novak Djokovic’s eighth consecutive semifinal appearance at the All England Club and set up a major clash with defending champion Jannik Sinner.
The victory marked another historic moment in the Djokovic Wimbledon run, as he became the first man to reach the last four eight straight times. He also moved ahead of Roger Federer for another Wimbledon record after previously passing the Swiss great for most match wins at the tournament.
Djokovic needed his experience and determination to overcome a strong challenge from Auger-Aliassime, who pushed him throughout the match. The Serbian said, “I won with a racket and a lot of heart.”
He added, “I guess it’s the management of the nerves and the extreme tension you feel in these kinds of matches. Towards the end, it was anybody’s game. The scoreline was even all the way through. It was anybody’s game in the super tiebreak in the fifth.”
The Djokovic Wimbledon run continues as he targets an eighth title at the tournament and a record 25th major trophy. Looking ahead to Sinner, Djokovic said, “It’s just another semifinal for me. I’m going to look at the numbers and everything when I finish my career.”
