Fulham appoints Alvaro Arbeloa as head coach, bringing the former Real Madrid coach to England for his first overseas managerial role.
Fulham have appointed Alvaro Arbeloa as their new head coach on a contract running until 2029, marking his first managerial role outside Spain.
The Premier League club confirmed the appointment on Tuesday, with Alvaro Arbeloa replacing Portuguese coach Marco Silva, who left Fulham after five years in charge to join Benfica. The former Real Madrid player now begins a new chapter as he takes responsibility for his first team in England.
“It is a real honour for me to be embarking on this new stage at Fulham,” Arbeloa said in a club statement.
“I am really looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere at Craven Cottage with Fulham fans and beginning pre-season with the players next week.”
The Fulham head coach appointment comes after Arbeloa’s recent spell at Real Madrid, where he moved from managing the reserve side to leading the first team in January. He replaced fellow Spaniard Xabi Alonso, who is now Chelsea manager, and guided the Spanish giants to a second-place finish in LaLiga.
The 43-year-old returns to England with strong experience from his playing career. Alvaro Arbeloa previously represented Liverpool and West Ham United, while his achievements include two Champions League titles with Real Madrid and a 2010 World Cup winners’ medal with Spain.
Fulham owner and president Shahid Khan welcomed the Fulham head coach appointment, praising Arbeloa’s ambition and experience around top-level football environments.
“Alvaro is, by his own admission, very ambitious. He has spent quality time around the best players, clubs and methods in the game, experiences which will serve him well here at Fulham.”
Fulham finished 11th in the Premier League last season and will begin the new campaign at home against London rivals Chelsea on 24 August.
